Cochrane

On the Way

The way from Tortel to Cochrane is mostly flat, excluding one long climb, but the road gets really bad near Cochrane. On the way from Tortel to Cochrane, we had to fix Shoham´s front carrier twice. To save money we slept 10 km before Cochrane in a very nice spot on the river where we found some strawberries.

In Town
We started by going to a car mechanic who is also a bicycle mechanic, where we met Naoki again. He ended up taking a bus from Tortel to Cochrane because his back carrier broke. The mechanic wasn´t able to help us with a new front carrier for Amit, and neither any of the Ferreterias (hardware stores) in town.

The internet there was the fastest so far in Chile, and we spent a lot of time and money there. We found some good bakeries there where we ate delicious Empanadas, a lemon meringue cake, and a raspberry muffin.

Camping
We got to the only camping in town which offers showers (right near the plaza at the center, 3,000 CH$) and stayed there for 2 nights. There we met three Chilean students for Eco-Tourism in Santiago doing a project to revive the cycling on the Carratera Austral (cicloaustral.com), and we went with them to see a waterfall not far from town.

The camping is in a beautiful garden with many fruits: apples, prunes, cherries, cranberries and a bit of raspberries. We picked many cherries and prunes and made jams of them. We gave a nice portion to the lady who runs the camping, and in return we got a traditional layer cake of Dulce de Leche (or Manjar in Chilean).
There we tried to make a traditional Humus salad, but without Tahini it is not the same. We made also a very good yellow peas soup, and a not so great chocolate (pan-) cake.
To save money and to make sure we don´t spend another day at the internet place, we left at 8 PM, in hope of finding a place to sleep nearby.

P.S.
All the photos above were not taken by us and are just for illustration purposes.
